Cooroy is a historic country town located 130klms north of Brisbane and 20 klms west of Noosa in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The town is named after Cooroy Mountain, which was originally called Coorooey, from the Aboriginal word for possum, kurui.
Built from a timber and logging industry at the end of the 1800’s, Cooroy (as with many of its surrounding towns) has a colourful history. Still maintaining a charm of heritage through its main streets, with a relaxed and friendly vibe, you could be forgiven for feeling like you’ve taken a step back in time.
Settled in the late 1800s as a camp for the sawmill workers, the town prospered when the railway arrived and the region's timber and dairy industries boomed. The now Cooroy Butter Factory Community Arts Centre has an exhibition space that shows work by local and interstate artists.
Although logging is no longer a local industry, timber is still prominent in the materials chosen by local craftspeople, who exhibit at woodwork and craft shows as well as the Contemporary Furniture Exhibition each October.
In recent years, with thanks to the support of community groups, Cooroy has won acclaim and prizes for its streetscapes and community artwork.
Visitors to Cooroy can explore the Noosa Botanic Gardens to see native plants and abundant bird life. Covering 20 acres, the gardens are a popular venue for concerts, weddings and other events. The gardens offer beautiful water views over Lake Macdonald and are a great location for a leisurely stroll or family picnic. The shores of nearby Lake Macdonald also abound with tranquil spots for a picnic.
A most convenient location being a stone’s throw from the magical beaches and amenities that Noosa has to offer and just a quick trip through the hinterland to Gympie on the now-opened new Bruce Highway.
Heritage, nature, arts, sports shopping and dining are all on offer to ensure Cooroy has something for everyone.
